How image compression works
JPG and WebP use lossy compression: they discard detail the eye rarely notices. Lowering the quality from 100% to about 75% often cuts the file size by more than half with very little visible change. Going much lower starts to show blocky artefacts.
PNG is lossless, so it stays large. For photos and screenshots, converting to JPG or WebP is the biggest saving. Keep PNG for logos and graphics that need sharp edges or transparency.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser using the Canvas API, so your photos stay on your device.
How do I compress an image to under 100 KB or 200 KB?
Choose Target size, type the number of KB, and add your image. The tool lowers the quality, and the size if needed, until the file fits. Very large photos may need a smaller max width as well.
Will compressing reduce the quality?
JPG and WebP compression is lossy, so there is a small loss. At around 75% quality it is hard to notice. You can always compare the result before downloading.
Why did my PNG barely get smaller?
PNG is lossless. Choose JPG or WebP as the output format, or reduce the max width, for a much smaller file. Keep PNG only if you need transparency.
Is there a size or file limit?
There is no fixed limit. Very large images (tens of megapixels) depend on your device's memory.
